Lossless trimming, explained
Video files store most frames as differences from the frames around them; only keyframes are complete pictures. Cutting without re-encoding means starting at a keyframe — that's why fast trim is instant and perfect-quality but snaps its cut points. Frame-precise mode decodes and re-encodes the selection instead: exact boundaries, small quality cost, more time. We wrote up how keyframes actually work if you want the details.

- What's the difference between fast and frame-precise trim?
- Fast trim copies the video stream without re-encoding — instant and zero quality loss, but cuts snap to keyframes, so the start can land up to a couple of seconds off. Frame-precise mode re-encodes, which takes longer but cuts exactly where you asked.
- Why did my cut start slightly before the second I chose?
- Compressed video can only be split cleanly at keyframes. Fast mode starts at the nearest keyframe before your chosen time; if you need the exact frame, tick frame-precise.
- Is my video uploaded anywhere?
- No. VidClip runs FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. The file is read from your disk into the page's memory, processed there, and saved back to your disk. There is no upload, no server queue, and no copy of your footage anywhere but your machine.
- Is there a watermark?
