Resize Video for Instagram Reels: 1080x1920 Fast

Make it 1080 pixels wide by 1920 tall. That is the working target and it is what every spec card will tell you, but it is worth knowing that Instagram's own help centre does not publish that figure. What Instagram publishes, as of August 2026, is a range: a reel can have any aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16, with a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and a minimum frame rate of 30 FPS. 1080x1920 is simply the tallest end of that range at a sensible pixel count. The ratio is the part Instagram enforces. The pixel count is a quality decision you are making for yourself, and if you are starting from landscape footage it is a decision with a real cost, because 1920x1080 centre-cropped to 9:16 comes out at 608x1080, which is under Instagram's own stated minimum.
That last number is the reason a spec card is not enough. Knowing the target does not tell you how to get there from what you actually shot. What size should a Reel be?
Here is every number worth having, with a column saying plainly whether it came from a first-party Instagram or Meta page that was read on 31 August 2026, or whether it did not.

Two things fall out of that table. First, most of the confident numbers circulating about Reels are not Instagram's numbers. The 90-second and 15-minute limits both appear widely, and neither matches what the record-a-reel page says today. Second, the limits that are genuinely documented in hard figures belong to the publishing API, not to the app on your phone, so if you post through a scheduler you are working to a stricter spec than someone posting by hand.
Practically: aim at 1080x1920, stay at or above 30 FPS, keep it under three minutes if reach matters, and stop worrying about a file size ceiling nobody has published.
Crop or pad: which do you pick for landscape footage?
Vertical footage from a phone is already close to 9:16 and needs almost nothing done to it. Landscape footage is the actual problem, and it has no free solution. A 16:9 frame cannot become a 9:16 frame while keeping all of its content at full size. You are choosing what to sacrifice.
Crop. Keep the full height, throw away the sides. The largest 9:16 box that fits inside 1920x1080 is 608x1080, because 1080 multiplied by 9/16 is 607.5, rounded to an even number that a standard encoder will accept. You keep every pixel of picture you keep, at full quality, but you have discarded 68 percent of the width, and the result is 608 pixels wide against Instagram's stated 720 pixel minimum. Instagram will not reject it, but you are handing the encoder less than it asked for.
That arithmetic flips completely at 4K. A 3840x2160 source cropped to 9:16 lands around 1214x2160, comfortably above 1080 wide even after the crop. This is the single strongest argument for shooting landscape at 4K when you know a vertical cut is coming: the crop costs you framing, not resolution.
Pad. Keep the whole frame, add bars. Fit 1920x1080 into a 1080x1920 canvas and the picture band is 1080x608, sitting in the middle with black above and below. Nothing is lost from the image, but the picture occupies less than a third of the vertical space, and on a feed full of edge-to-edge video that reads as a repost rather than a reel. It also means whatever you put in the bars is the only thing filling two-thirds of the screen.
The choice, stated as a rule. Crop when the subject is near the centre of the frame and your source is 4K or better. Pad when the content genuinely cannot survive losing its edges: a wide chart, a screen recording of a desktop, a group shot where cropping cuts someone out. And when the shot is worth reshooting, shoot vertical, because both of the above are damage control for a decision made at record time.
There is a fourth thing people try that deserves a warning. Cropping is a fixed rectangle, so if your subject drifts across a wide frame, a centre crop will not follow them, and neither will any of the one-click resizers. Following a moving subject means keyframed reframing in a real editor. If that is what your footage needs, no free tool is going to do it for you.

Where are the safe zones and what covers them?
The frame you export is not the frame people see. Instagram draws its interface on top of your video, and the parts it covers are predictable.
Along the bottom sits the account name, the caption with its "more" expander, the audio track row, and on many reels a follow button or a call to action. That stack is the deepest intrusion by a wide margin, and it grows taller the longer your caption is. Along the right edge runs the action rail: like, comment, share, more, and the spinning audio thumbnail at the bottom of it. Across the top is the Reels header and the camera control. On some devices a system status bar and a home indicator take a further sliver off each end.
Meta publishes exact guidance only for ad creative, not for organic reels, and it is worth reading in its own words. Its safe zone documentation says that for 9:16 creative in Stories, Reels and Feed you should "keep the edges (top, bottom and sides) free of key creative elements, text and logos," and gives one hard figure: ads carrying a disclaimer "should leave the bottom 40% of your ad free from text, logos and other key creative elements." The same page adds a detail that almost nobody accounts for. On screens taller than 9:16, Meta may "zoom the creative to better fill the whole screen (which can crop areas outside the Safe Zone)," or letterbox it with a black background. Your 9:16 export is not guaranteed to be shown at 9:16.
Translated into where you actually put things: the middle vertical band of the frame is the only part you can rely on. Titles and any text you need read should sit above the caption stack and below the header, and away from the right edge where the action rail runs. Faces belong in that same band. If your title card is centred vertically it survives everything, including the zoom-to-fill case. If it is sitting at the bottom of the frame because that is where it looked good in the editor, it is going to end up behind a username.
One consequence specific to this site: free exports here carry a small semi-transparent VidClip mark in a corner of the frame, and a corner is exactly where the interface sits. It is deliberately small and mostly ends up under the UI rather than over your subject, but if a clean frame matters, that is what Pro removes.
Does uploading a bigger file improve Reel quality?
Only up to a point, and the point arrives earlier than people expect.
Instagram re-encodes what you send. The clearest first-party evidence sits on the reel size page itself, which offers a Media quality setting with an "Upload at highest quality" toggle and warns that turning it on means uploads "may take longer." A platform that stores your file untouched has no reason to offer a quality toggle. For photos, Instagram documents the resizing behaviour outright: its image resolution page says that a photo shared at higher resolution is sized "down to a width of 1080 pixels." The video pipeline is not documented in that kind of detail, but the publishing API's ceilings point the same way, capping video bitrate at 25 Mbps VBR and horizontal pixels at 1920.
So the useful mental model is that you are feeding a transcoder, not a hard drive. Past roughly 1080x1920 at a clean bitrate, extra bits are extra material for the re-encoder to discard, and the visible result stops improving while your upload time keeps growing. What does still help, because it survives transcoding, is the quality of what you feed in: a constant frame rate rather than a variable one, H.264 High profile or HEVC, AAC audio, and no prior generation of heavy compression baked into the source. Re-encoding an already-compressed export compounds the damage, which is why a single pass from your original beats a chain of three tools each doing a little.

The other half of the toggle question: turn on Upload at highest quality in your Instagram settings. Profile, then Menu, then Media quality under "Your app and media". It is off by default for a lot of accounts, and it is free.
How do you resize without an editor?
Everything above can be done on this site, in the page, with no account and no upload. The file is read into your browser's memory through the ordinary file picker and processed by FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, running on your own CPU. Nothing is sent anywhere. The order that works:
- Fix the ratio first, with crop. Pick 9:16 and it takes the largest 9:16 box that fits inside your source and centres it, rounded to even pixel dimensions because encoders require them. Full source resolution is preserved, so a 4K landscape clip stays above 1080 wide after the crop. This is the step that determines whether Instagram displays your reel full-bleed.
- Then downscale if the file is bigger than you need, with resize. Worth knowing exactly what it does: it targets a height of 480p, 720p or 1080p and lets the width follow. On a vertical clip that means 1080p gives you 1080 tall, which at 9:16 is 608 wide, so on already-vertical footage you usually want to leave the resize alone and let Instagram do the downscale. Use it when your source is a large landscape file and you want to shed pixels before cropping, or when you are deliberately making a smaller upload.
- Compress if you have a size to hit, with compress. Free compression works by quality preset. Compressing to an exact target size is a Pro feature. If your source is a screen recording, reduce screen recording file size is the more specific guide.
- Check the framing before you post. Play the export at phone width and put your thumb over the bottom third and the right edge. Anything you cannot read through that test is not going to be read.

9:16 in practice, which is what 1080x1920 works out to. Instagram's help centre states the supported range as anything between 1.91:1 and 9:16, so a square or a 4:5 vertical is also valid and will simply be shown smaller. 9:16 is the only ratio that fills a phone screen edge to edge, which is why it has become the default.
Will Instagram crop my video?
It will fit your video to the player rather than crop it, as long as your ratio is inside the supported range. The case where cropping genuinely happens is the one Meta documents for ads: on screens taller than 9:16, it may zoom your creative to fill the display, which cuts into the edges of the frame. Exporting at exactly 9:16 does not immunise you against that, which is why the safe zone advice above is about where you place things, not just what ratio you export.
Does Instagram compress uploads?
Yes. Instagram offers an "Upload at highest quality" setting precisely because it re-encodes what you send, and its photo documentation states outright that images above 1080 pixels wide are sized down. Video is transcoded on the same principle. The practical takeaway is that a very large upload does not preserve quality on the other side, but a clean encode at sensible dimensions does better than a heavily recompressed one, so export once from your original rather than passing it through several tools.
Can I post a landscape video as a Reel?
You can, because 1.91:1 sits inside the supported range, and it will appear as a small horizontal band in the middle of a mostly empty screen. It is valid but it looks like a repost. If the footage cannot be cropped without losing what matters, padding it into a 1080x1920 canvas at least gives you control over what fills the space above and below instead of leaving it to the player. If it can be cropped, crop it, and shoot vertical next time.
